The Judge's Puzzle

Photo from: www.knowledgebase-script.com
It's time for us to try solving the logic problem. You can take a look of the illustration here to help you solve the problem. Here is the scenario:

Four criminals are caught and are to be punished. The judge allows them to be freed if they can solve the puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung. They agreed. The four criminals lined up on some steps(shown in picture). They are all facing in the same direction. The wall separates the fourth man from the other three.

To Summarize:
-Man 1 can see men 2 and 3.
-Man 2 can see man 3.
-Man 3 can see none of the others.
-Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initially don't know what color hat they are wearing as soon as they for certain what color it is.

-They are not allowed to turn around and move.
-They are not allowed to talk to each other
-They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Now the question is "Who is the first person to shout out and why?"

Is Greenland larger than Australia?

The question made me think for a moment. If we are to see the map we are using in school, it is obvious that Greenland is bigger than Australia. If that is true then we can say that an island is bigger than a continent which sounds unusual. In order to resolve this conflict in my head, I tried searching it in Google. After a bit of research and some clicks, I found out that the answer to that question is No(I knew it). My coming up to the resolution again gave rise to another question, Why does Greenland look larger than Australia in maps? The answer is on the map itself! It's because of the map projection. In making the maps, the places near the poles seems to be stretched more compared to the equator. The reason behind this is to be able to lay the spherical surface of the earth into a flat surface*. Here is the proof to the answer.

*Note that I changed "standardize the scale that is to be used in the map" to "be able to lay the spherical surface of the earth into a flat surface" (since April 30, 2013). Leave a comment below so I can know if the change I made is just fine or bad.

"Anti-Gravity" Optical Illusion

Video from: www.youtube.com

Its been a long time before I had my second post for this month. It has been a bit busy the past days. The video above is a very cool illusion. This illusion is created by Koukichi Sugihara. I suggest you watch the video first before you continue reading. The video illustrates how the wooden balls were said to be magnetized to the top of the slope thus breaking the laws of gravity(which is not). It is a kind of a perspective illusion similar to the ones made by Edgar Mueller, only in a form of a model. This illusion is said to be the Best Visual Illusion of the Year 2010. I hope you like it. If you enjoyed it a lot, you may share it to the whole world by leaving a comment below.

Just a bunch of apple facts

Photo from http://en.wikipedia.org
Hey guys, It has been another month for me to fill the blog with lots of things. Anything we can think of, from trees, houses, illusions and silly stuff. After a long time of the blog's silence, I am here to post another thing we are all familiar with, the apple fruit. As promised, here are some facts about the apple, facts that you probably don't know.

*The science of apple growing is called pomology.

*Apples are a member of the rose family.

*25 percent of an apple's volume is air. That is why they float.

*In colonial time apples were called winter banana or melt-in-the-mouth.

*Apples account for 50% of the world's deciduous fruit tree production.

*The largest apple picked weighed three pounds.
